Have you already set your goals for your business for this month? If you haven’t, this post will teach you how to properly goal set yourself so that you can start building your business.

Goals vs. Wishes

Goal setting is one of those activities that all successful business owners put at the top of their To-Do lists, especially during the start of the month.

At the same time, however, there are lots of people out there that also spend time at the start of the month. But by the end of the month, they look back at the list of goals that they have made, and they see that they weren’t able to accomplish any of the goals that they have set.

Why does this happen?

I personally believe that the reason why so many people are not able to reach any of the goals they set is because of the way that they have written their list of goals they want to achieve. More often than not, lots of these look more like wish lists rather than lists of goals.

That’s why before we get into learning how to properly set your goals so that you can start experiencing success, especially when it comes to building your business, it’s very important to first know the difference between a goal and a wish.

Basically, a wish is anything that you can imagine. The sky is the limit when it comes to making wishes. That’s because wishes are nothing more than fragments of our imagination.

Goals, on the other hand, are a bit more specific. One source I found defines a goal as “an observable and measurable end result having one or more objectives to be achieved within a more or less fixed timeframe.” Tweet this

Simply put, there are two things that transform a mere wish into a goal:

1. It has to be measurable. You need to have a basis to see how far or how close you are towards the goal set. For example, if one of your goals is to grow your team in your network marketing business, one way to measure it is with the number of people that you personally sponsor into your team. If you got a home-based business that offers some type of service, like a travel agency, for example, you can measure how far or how close you are to the goals you set with the number of trips you’ve booked.

2. There is a specific timeframe. Often, this is the one thing that’s missing whenever most people set goals for themselves. Lots of people would list down so many great things that they want to accomplish. But when you ask them when do they expect to achieve this, they would often answer “someday” or “soon.” You need to have an estimated timeframe that you’d want to reach the goals you’ve set.

Tips on Setting Your Goals

Now that we know the difference between a goal and a wish, here are 5 very simple tips on how to set your goals for this month.

1. Know Where You Are

Before actually sitting down and writing your goals, take some time to take a look at the past few months that you have been building your business and see what areas you perhaps may need to work on in order to turn things around. 2. Break Things Down

Instead of simply writing down a list of huge goals, try breaking these down into smaller goals that you can set daily, weekly, or monthly. This makes it easier to measure how close you’re getting to your primary goals.

3. Limit Yourself to a Few Strategies

Reaching your goals is very much like wall climbing. You will be presented with so many different strategies, techniques, and methods in order for you to reach the top. But you don’t need to take all of them. All you need is to choose a select few and continue this route until you reach the top.

4. Don’t Overload Yourself

When you set your goals, try to keep the list small. This way, you don’t find yourself feeling overwhelmed and spreading yourself way too thin. 3 to 5 goals to reach is a good range to start with. Remember, it’s always easier to add more to the list once to begin scratching off the goals you’ve achieved. Not to mention it gives you a good sense of accomplishment when you do that.

5. Be Kind to Yourself

Even the most successful business owners have moments when they don’t hit the goals they set for themselves and their businesses. So, if that happens to you, don’t fret over it too much. Instead, take a look at what areas do you need to adjust in order for you to do better.
